NDT
ACCESS Group Inc. has two therapists certified in neurodevelopmental treatment and several others who know and practice the techniques. NDT comprises techniques that address the impairments caused by neuropathology. Children with cerebral palsy and other disabilities related to the nervous system can benefit from these techniques, which are designed to tackle impairments globally, joining speech/language, physical and occupational therapies to remediate problems at the core. NDT is implemented primarily during the crucial birth-to-age-3 developing years.
NDT techniques unite several body systems – skeletal, muscular, nervous, etc. – at once. Some measures include body positioning and muscle strengthening exercises aimed at addressing future developmental functionality, such as holding a pencil or speaking. For example, a child who lacks the breath support to engage in normal speech might be placed in alternate seating – such as a T-stool or balance ball ¬– to force his body into an upright position. A successful technique will then allow a child to generalize the lesson to all settings. In the alternate chair example, the child will eventually learn to sit upright in a regular chair, demonstrating the ideal posture for the breath support needed for speech.
